12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS

Katja is such an inspiration!  She is a Designer and Quilt Shop owner in BC (Canada) and she has published her second book this summer.  You can quilt along with her here  and share in the progress of your blocks.

I believe the perpetual calendar was just released at Fall Quilt Market and is the perfect stocking stuffer.  Can someone PLEASE tell my husband 🙂

STEP 8: ADDING BORDERS

img_0806-002The border is the last strip of fabric that you sew around the entire perimeter of the quilt (not to be confused with the binding).  You usually choose the width relative to the thickness of your mattress as it is often added to cover that specific area.

The common mistake at this stage is to cut the border to the length that is written on the pattern rather than checking the actual length of your quilt on hand.  And this is why this process is step 8 in the 12 steps to successful quilt making! Continue reading “STEP 8: ADDING BORDERS”

12 DESIGNERS OF CHRISTMAS

claire-noelThe holiday season is fast approaching and I am sure many husbands, kids and friends are wondering what to get their favorite quilter for Christmas!

Lindsey Rhodes truly inspired me last May when she launched May is for Makers.  I loved how people connected and started committing to purchasing a pattern a week and making the project.  It got me thinking that we should have a month dedicated to showcasing designers so we could find new projects.

STEP 7: ASSEMBLING YOUR BLOCKS

img_0812You’ve finally finished your blocks and you are thinking that the worst part is done!

Really?

Assembling your blocks is a crucial moment: you have to maintain your accuracy while ensuring that all the blocks are sewn in the right direction.  And you will have guessed it!  It’s the Step 7 in the 12 steps to successful quilt making. Continue reading “STEP 7: ASSEMBLING YOUR BLOCKS”

STEP 6: TAKING THE RIGHT MEASUREMENTS

step-6We are half way through the 12 steps to successful quilt making.  And I must admit:  This is my favorite! In fact it is my favorite because nobody seems to take notice and yet it is the most important point.

When piecing a quilt following a pattern: when do you check the measurements of your work?

If you need a finished 12 inch block: do you check each one as soon as it is made to ensure that it measures 12½“?

Much to my surprise, not many people can answer yes.

STEP 5: PRECISE 1/4″ SEAM ALLOWANCE

Do you have a quarter inch foot on your sewing machine?

Do you know where to find the quarter inch of your foot?

These are the two questions I automatically ask any student inquiring about how to achieve a precise seam allowance.

step-5 Continue reading “STEP 5: PRECISE 1/4″ SEAM ALLOWANCE”

STEP 4: PRECISE CUTTING

Step 4: Precise cuttingI wrote an article on this subject  in the Autumn 2014 Quilter’s World issue.

When deciding on the 12 steps to successful quilt making, I knew precision cutting had to be one of them.  The only question was which ranking it would have.

Here are a few key elements to ensure that you have precision cutting: Continue reading “STEP 4: PRECISE CUTTING”

STEP 3: PRESSING YOUR FABRICS

To pStep 3: Pressing Fabricsress or not to press?  That is a common question.  And I believe it to be the third step in the 12 steps to successful quilt making as ironing fabrics is essential in quilting.

But beware!

Please do not iron fabrics like you would a men’s shirt. I prefer saying that we press our fabrics! Continue reading “STEP 3: PRESSING YOUR FABRICS”

WEEKEND GETAWAY IN VERMONT

If you are looking for something to do over the weekend I might suggest heading over to Vermont!

This is THE weekend to go if you are a quilter!  You have to go to the Vermont Quilt Festival in Essex Junction.  And you will have many surprises.  This year, they are celebrating their 40th anniversary and  Ruth B. McDowell is their special exhibit along with a variety of antique quilts in the Miller North building.  There will be 200 quilts featured in the competition located in the Miller South building and this year they were happy to notice a record breaking number of quilts from Quebec!  Can’t wait to see them all starting Thursday night! SPRING QUILT MARKET

I have made it back home from Spring Quilt Market in Salt Lake City and took some time to rest after a hectic schedule which included a sprint run in O’Hare airport to make my connecting flight home.  I had such a great time and met so many wonderful people that it will be difficult to keep this blog short.

The exciting news is that I finally launched my new pattern Dancing Diamonds and you can order your copy from PlumEasy Patterns. Continue reading “SPRING QUILT MARKET”
